Aftermath - Chapter 2

Continued from here.

Giles found it hard to make himself go see Wesley. He checked with the safe house's manager, made certain everything was in order. Drank his morning coffee, just as he'd done for weeks now. Only, usually, it was all accomplished next to Wes' bed. He'd called Andrew, let the man know he'd been in the office today . . . sometime. He'd resisted giving an exact hour.

He'd checked on Sarah and Angel, chatted with the former and spoke to the later for as long as he was in the room. Sighing, with nothing else to occupy his time, Giles made sure it was all right with the nurses and took Wesley a cup of coffee.

He was not surprised to find the man already awake and deep into researching Angel's chart, scribbling notes and lost in thought.

He didn't even seem to notice when Giles entered, though Giles might have been wrong about that as the man tilted his head to the sided and inhaled deeply. Right. He must smell out of place.

"Giles, good morning." Wesley kept his voice polite, not letting a trace of his hurt slip into it. The man had been in the building all morning. He'd catch whiffs of that scent and look up only to find the room empty. Now though, he knew Giles was present and something in him relaxed a bit at the thought.

"Good morning, Wesley. I brought you some coffee. Please, tell me you haven't been awake all night examining that?" Giles slipped easily into his old routine. The questions were different now. Instead of 'tell me you haven't been awake from a nightmare all night', it was this. Still, it felt . . . familiar and he actually like that. It had been a while since he'd had any real routine. The Slayers, the Council, there was always something new and different to snap up his attention, but . . . the others had done an amazing job of taking up the slack while he was gone and now it seemed he was barely needed at all . . .

"Thank you," Wesley took a sip of the coffee and cringed, snorting at the face he must have made to have Giles chuckle like that. "It's awful," he said with a small laugh.

"I know, but one gets--oh, it must be worse for you. I'm sorry, I hadn't considered . . ."

"No, no. It's fine. I hadn't thought of that myself. And, no, I haven't been up all night. I . . . slept quite a bit actually." He'd had dreams. Not nightmares, exactly, just . . . bits and flashes of memories, he was sure. Throwing jelly donuts at several people was in there somewhere.

"How was your visit with . . . your friends?"

"Hmmm? Oh." Wesley's eyes darted automatically to Gunn's old axe, set in the corner nearest his bed. "It went . . . well. Is, er, that why you left?"

"What?" Giles blinked at the question, confused. He'd assumed Wesley would barely notice his absence as the man had been deep in thought and . . . "I went home," he said with a shake of his head. "I thought you might like some time with people you care about."
